How to Fix a Wrinkled Baseball Cap

Depending on how badly your cap is wrinkled and what tools you have at home, one of these four methods will restore its shape.

Method 1: The Steaming Method (Safest & Most Effective)

This is my absolute favorite method. The hot water of the steaming process will absorb into the fabric and gently stretch it, relaxing the wrinkles. I watched my coach, a professional hat shaper, use this exact method.

Step 1: Boil some hot water in a bowl or an electric kettle. Keep the kettle at a medium temperature so it produces a steady stream of steam.

Step 2: Hold the wrinkled area of the cap carefully over the steam for 3-5 minutes. (Be careful not to burn your hands!)

Step 3: Once the fabric feels warm and slightly damp, straighten the cap from the inside with your hands, pressing outward against the wrinkles.

Step 4: Place the cap on a hat form, a rolled-up towel, or a round bowl, and let it air dry in that perfect shape.

Method 2: The “Shower Steam” Hack (Easiest)

If you don’t want to deal with boiling water or kettles, this lazy hack is incredibly effective for minor wrinkles.

Step 1: Turn on your bathroom shower to the hottest setting and close the door to build up steam.

Step 2: Hang the wrinkled baseball cap on a hook or towel rack inside the bathroom (but keep it away from the direct water stream).

Step 3: Let it sit in the steamy bathroom for 15-20 minutes.

Step 4: The steam will naturally relax the fibers. Take it out, smooth the wrinkles with your hands, and place it on a hat form or a rolled-up towel to air dry.

Method 3: Ironing (For Stubborn Crown Wrinkles)

The ironing heat is excellent for removing deep, stubborn wrinkles on the brim or the front panels of the crown.

However, never apply the iron directly to the hat, or you will melt the synthetic fibers!

Step 1: Stuff the inside of the cap tightly with rolled-up towels so it holds its shape perfectly and gives you a solid surface to press against.

Step 2: Place a damp, clean cotton cloth over the wrinkled area of the cap.

Step 3: Set your iron to medium heat.

Step 4: Lightly press the iron over the damp cloth in a constant, moving motion. Do not let the iron rest in one spot. The steam created by the damp cloth will penetrate the cap and instantly smooth the wrinkles.

Method 4: The Lukewarm Water Soak (For Deeply Crushed Hats)

If your hat was completely squashed at the bottom of a suitcase for a week, a full soak is needed to reset its entire shape. (Note: Only do this for modern hats with plastic brims!)

Step 1: Fill a tub or a large bowl with lukewarm water (between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius).

Step 2: Submerge your cap completely for 20-30 seconds.

Step 3: Remove the cap and use your hands to straighten the brim and push out the wrinkles from the crown.

Step 4: Place the wet cap tightly onto a hat form, a balled-up towel, or even wear it on your head until it dries! This guarantees it will dry perfectly to the shape of a head.

What to Avoid (The Machine Warnings)

There are a lot of “viral hacks” on the internet that will completely destroy your favorite hat. If you want your cap to survive, never do these two things:

• The Washing Machine: Never throw a structured baseball cap into a washing machine. The heavy agitation will completely crush the crown and ruin the structural integrity of the brim.
