It happens to the best of us. You unpack your suitcase, or pull your favorite baseball cap out from under a pile of clothes, only to find the crown completely crushed and the brim painfully wrinkled.
A careless packaging operation or a bad transfer can damage the appearance of a baseball cap. But before you throw your favorite lucky hat in the trash, take a deep breath. With a little bit of heat, moisture, and the right technique, you can restore that crisp, structured look.
As a professional player, I know how essential a perfectly shaped cap is. Here is exactly how to fix a wrinkled baseball cap for longer use—without accidentally destroying it.
The 1983 Rule (The Tap Test): Before trying any of the methods below, you must identify what your brim is made of.
Pre-1983 Vintage Hats (Cardboard Brim): If you tap the brim and it sounds hollow or feels like stiff paper, it is likely cardboard. DO NOT soak this hat in water or use heavy steam, or the brim will turn into mush and be ruined foreverModern Hats (Plastic Brim): If it sounds solid and feels rigid, it’s a modern plastic core. These are safe to treat with steam, hot water, and iron heat.

Importance of Baseball Cap While Playing Baseball Games
As a baseball player, I can say from personal experience how much more important a baseball cap is for a baseball player. So, how much does it matter if the cap is required or not?
Let’s talk about the significance of the baseball cap before we get into the fixing procedure.
It Covers Players Eyes From The Sunlight
One of the most significant advantages of wearing a baseball cap is that it helps shield players’ eyes from the sun. Your eyes are protected against the sun by the bill of your baseball cap.
It Regulates The Body’s Temperature
Baseball caps assist in keeping players’ body temperatures down and controlled because they filter most sun rays. Without that, your body temperature might rise in hot, bright conditions that can have several unfortunate consequences.
Prevents Players From Becoming Sunburned
An additional advantage of wearing a baseball cap is that it protects against sunburn. Before you play, make sure to get your baseball cap. Simply wearing it while playing in the sun may save you from getting a sunburn – even if it’s just a little bit.
Players’ Skin Cancer Is Protected
Using a baseball hat shields the player’s skin and hair from skin cancer, just as sunburn shields players from sunburn. It increases players’ chances of acquiring skin cancer in these regions without a hat.
What Should You Know Before Fixing a Wrinkled Hat?
Before we go into the strategies, it’s essential to appreciate the following facts before attempting to repair the cap without compromising its curvature:
Analyze The Inside Material And The Sweatband
Check the cap if it has a sweatband inside. If the inner lining is genuine leather, it’s crucial to skip steam.
Know The Fabric Of Your Baseball Cap
You need to be sure about your baseball cap’s fabric. Because hot or cold water you need to use that finalizes the material.
Review the Care Instructions
Don’t ever overlook your cap’s care label! They are stitched inside the hat to provide you with the relevant information. It indicates what you should not do with your cap.

How to Fix a Wrinkled Baseball Cap
Depending on how badly your cap is wrinkled and what tools you have at home, one of these four methods will restore its shape.
Method 1: The Steaming Method (Safest & Most Effective)
This is my absolute favorite method. The hot water of the steaming process will absorb into the fabric and gently stretch it, relaxing the wrinkles. I watched my coach, a professional hat shaper, use this exact method.

Step 1: Boil some hot water in a bowl or an electric kettle. Keep the kettle at a medium temperature so it produces a steady stream of steam.
Step 2: Hold the wrinkled area of the cap carefully over the steam for 3-5 minutes. (Be careful not to burn your hands!)
Step 3: Once the fabric feels warm and slightly damp, straighten the cap from the inside with your hands, pressing outward against the wrinkles.
Step 4: Place the cap on a hat form, a rolled-up towel, or a round bowl, and let it air dry in that perfect shape.
Method 2: The “Shower Steam” Hack (Easiest)
If you don’t want to deal with boiling water or kettles, this lazy hack is incredibly effective for minor wrinkles.
Step 1: Turn on your bathroom shower to the hottest setting and close the door to build up steam.
Step 2: Hang the wrinkled baseball cap on a hook or towel rack inside the bathroom (but keep it away from the direct water stream).

Step 3: Let it sit in the steamy bathroom for 15-20 minutes.
Step 4: The steam will naturally relax the fibers. Take it out, smooth the wrinkles with your hands, and place it on a hat form or a rolled-up towel to air dry.
Method 3: Ironing (For Stubborn Crown Wrinkles)
The ironing heat is excellent for removing deep, stubborn wrinkles on the brim or the front panels of the crown.
However, never apply the iron directly to the hat, or you will melt the synthetic fibers!
Step 1: Stuff the inside of the cap tightly with rolled-up towels so it holds its shape perfectly and gives you a solid surface to press against.

Step 2: Place a damp, clean cotton cloth over the wrinkled area of the cap.
Step 3: Set your iron to medium heat.
Step 4: Lightly press the iron over the damp cloth in a constant, moving motion. Do not let the iron rest in one spot. The steam created by the damp cloth will penetrate the cap and instantly smooth the wrinkles.
Method 4: The Lukewarm Water Soak (For Deeply Crushed Hats)
If your hat was completely squashed at the bottom of a suitcase for a week, a full soak is needed to reset its entire shape. (Note: Only do this for modern hats with plastic brims!)
Step 1: Fill a tub or a large bowl with lukewarm water (between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius).

Step 2: Submerge your cap completely for 20-30 seconds.
Step 3: Remove the cap and use your hands to straighten the brim and push out the wrinkles from the crown.
Step 4: Place the wet cap tightly onto a hat form, a balled-up towel, or even wear it on your head until it dries! This guarantees it will dry perfectly to the shape of a head.

What to Avoid (The Machine Warnings)
There are a lot of “viral hacks” on the internet that will completely destroy your favorite hat. If you want your cap to survive, never do these two things:
- The Washing Machine: Never throw a structured baseball cap into a washing machine. The heavy agitation will completely crush the crown and ruin the structural integrity of the brim. If your cap is dirty as well as wrinkled, you need to clean it by hand. 👉 Read My Full Guide Here: How to Wash a Baseball Cap Without Ruining It
- The Clothes Dryer: Do not put a baseball cap in the dryer to remove wrinkles. The intense, direct tumbling heat will shrink the cotton fibers unevenly and warp the plastic core of the brim beyond repair. Always air dry!
History of Baseball Cap
Do you know the history of Baseball caps? Let’s introduce you to the history of baseball caps.
On April 24, 1849, The New York Knickerbockers were the first who wear baseball hats. After a few years, the team began to use merino wool caps.
It featured a crown with a bill attached to it, which served as the inspiration for one of the most popular designs at the time. The cap was not made as it was in the eighteenth century, and the peak was much smaller, which was later changed to shelter the player’s eyes from the sun.
In 1895, Jesse Burkett, a renowned outfielder, tried baseball caps with a thin, green-tinted bill that shaded the batter from the sunlight and allowed fastballs a complete range of view.

In 1905, another baseball cap was invented named pillbox. This baseball cap did not make a significant impression in the major leagues.
But from 1909 through 1914, the Philadelphia Athletics made a name for themselves. They had such an undefeated run while wearing it that people credited their good fortune to the outfit.
In 1954 new 59Fifty baseball cap was introduced, which marked the beginning of a new era in baseball caps. It became the Major League Baseball’s official cap.
Then the Pittsburgh Pirates (1976–1986) reintroduced the pillbox cap style with modest changes to the design. From 1969 through 1991, the Montreal Expos introduced a six-panel red, white, and blue design in line with the colors of their logo.
Now Baseball players often wear wool hats, although they can be constructed of other materials. Caps without the need for an adjustment are usually made in six parts, with a button on top covered in identical material. But you have to keep the proper knowledge about how to get wrinkles out of a hat.
