How to Shrink Softball Pants? ( Four Effective Methods)

🎯 Find Your Best Shrinking Method

Answer 2 quick questions to find the most effective shrinking method for YOUR pants!

Method 01: Machine Washing and Hot Drying Process

You must remember that polyester is a sustainable material. They keep their form even in the toughest environment. As softball pants are mainly made of polyester, you have to d it precisely.

Though the washing machine method is the foremost way to shrink polyester pants, we don’t guarantee it will 100% work each time. But, yes, you will get a significant result.

Let’s go through the steps by step for the washing machine method.

Precaution

As we have mentioned before, polyester is the replacement for cotton for extensive use. They are highly sustainable and absorb more sweat than cotton.

You might find in the pants level not to wash the pants with extremely hot water. Otherwise, the pant’ color might be faded. As we are going to use the hottest water washing, you are going to violate the manufacturer’s instructions.

So, do it at your own risk.

Step 1- Turning Inside Out the Pant

As I mentioned above polyester is prone to fade, turn the pant inside out to reduce the chance of fading. Make sure you have done this before putting the pant into the washing machine.

Also, don’t wash more than one pant at a time. It’s highly recommended. But if you lack time, you can put two pairs of pants at a time inside the washing machine.

Shrinking Pants with Machine Washing and Hot Drying Process

After getting your pant ready, put it in the washing machine. Either you can use a mild detergent or not. Not because you are just shrinking your pant, not actually cleaning. It’s already clean.

As a side note, ensure that the temperature setting on your washing machine is at its maximum possible point. Check that you have the water at its boiling point ready.

It is not recommended that you wash the pants at temperatures lower than 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit). Also, though you are asked to use the hottest setting, this will not be over 110°C/230°F in your machine.

Prepare the machine for the toughest wash possible by selecting the longest cycle and the hottest water temperature. After you’ve washed your pants in hot water, you should also rinse them in hot water.

Foot Note: The temperature is the main catalyst in terms of shrinking. So, make surer you are using the temperature as per the suggestion.

Step 2- Dry the Pant at the Hottest Drying Setting in the Dryer

After giving the pants a wash and a rinse in the warmest water possible, it is now time to hang them out to dry in the warmest air possible. Make sure you’re not running behind schedule when you move the pants into the dryer.

Be careful to choose the setting that dries at the highest possible temperature. It’s possible the highest temperature may reach 80 degrees Celsius. But don’t overhit the dryer. Don’t change the pant’s orientation. Keep it inside out.

Step 3- Check the Pant If Shrunk

Remove the pant from the dryer after it has reached the desired level of dryness. Just let the pants air out. Maintain the temperature of the room in order to chill it. After it has cooled, check to see whether the pant has shrunk.

This should have been successful. You have the option of carrying out the operation once again if the amount of shrinkage achieved does not meet your expectations. But don’t overdo it. This may-

  • Fade the color entirely if you repeat the hot washing multiple times.
  • Also, you can consider an iron method to shrink more as an additional way.

Method 2: The Boiling Water Technique (For Stubborn 100% Polyester)

If your softball pants are made of 100% polyester, you might notice that a standard hot wash cycle barely makes a dent. Because polyester is essentially a synthetic plastic fiber, it requires intense, direct heat to force the threads to contract.

The polyster Heat zone

When the washing machine fails, the boiling water method is your best bet.

Warning: Only use this method for white or solid-colored pants, as extremely hot water can cause cheap dyes to bleed.

Here is the step-by-step process to safely boil-shrink your softball pants:

Step 1: Boil a Large Pot of Water

Fill a large stockpot (big enough to fully submerge the pants) with water and bring it to a rolling boil on your stove.

Step 2: Turn Off the Heat (Crucial Step)

Once the water is boiling, turn off the burner entirely. Do not leave the heat on, or the hot metal at the bottom of the pot will literally melt the polyester fibers of your pants.

Step 3: Submerge and Soak

Carefully push the softball pants into the hot water using a pair of metal tongs or a wooden spoon. Make sure they are completely submerged. Cover the pot with a lid and let the pants soak for 20 to 30 minutes. This intense heat relaxes the stubborn synthetic fibers.

Step 4: The High-Heat Shock

Carefully remove the pants using your tongs (they will be extremely hot). Transfer them immediately to a clean sink or tub and let them cool just enough so you can wring out the excess water.

Step 5: Tumble Dry on High

Throw the damp pants directly into your dryer. Set it to the highest heat setting and let it run for a full cycle. The combination of the boiling water relaxing the fibers and the dryer’s heat contracting them will give you the maximum possible shrinkage.

Coach’s Tip: You can repeat this process a second time if the pants are still a little baggy, but keep in mind that polyester usually maxes out its shrinkage after one or two boiling sessions.

Method 3: Targeted Shrinking (How to Shrink Just the Waistband)

Most softball players face a unique struggle: the pants fit perfectly around the thighs and calves but gap widely at the waist. Shrinking the entire pant in boiling water or the washing machine will ruin the fit on your legs.

If you only need to take an inch or two out of the waistband, you need a targeted approach. This method uses isolated heat to contract the elastic and polyester only where you need it.

Here is the step-by-step process for targeted shrinking:

Step 1: Wet the Waistband Only

Run the waistband of your softball pants under the hottest water your sink can produce. You can also use a sponge or a spray bottle filled with boiling water to saturate the elastic band. Crucial: Keep the legs and the seat of the pants completely dry.

Step 2: The Blow Dryer Technique

Lay the pants flat on a heat-resistant surface (like an ironing board or a thick towel). Plug in a hairdryer and set it to the highest heat setting.

Targeted Shrinking

Step 3: Apply Concentrated Heat

Hold the hairdryer about 2 to 3 inches away from the damp waistband. Slowly move the dryer back and forth along the entire elastic band, focusing on the inside and outside. The intense, direct heat will force the wet fibers to contract and tighten.

Step 4: Keep Drying Until Bone Dry

Continue this process until the waistband is completely dry to the touch. The heat and the drying process combined create the shrinkage.

Step 5: The Ironing Alternative

If the hairdryer isn’t working fast enough, you can use a clothing iron. Place a slightly damp cotton cloth (like a t-shirt) over the waistband. Turn the iron to the “Cotton” setting and press down firmly, moving it slowly across the band.

Warning: Never let the hot metal of the iron directly touch the bare polyester pants, as it will melt the synthetic fibers.

Coach’s Tip: The targeted shrinking method is perfect for minor adjustments right before a tournament weekend. It saves the overall fit of your pants while giving you that snug, secure feeling at the waist.

Method 04: Machine Washing and Ironing Method

The washing machine and ironing process is almost the same as the previous one.

Ironing Method for shrinking baseball pants

Here you have to use iron instead of hot drying. So, before the ironing, the process is-

  1. Wash your polyester pant in the machine with the highest mark of hot water it allows.
  2. After finishing the washing cycle, transfer the softball pant to an ironing board as soon as possible.

The Ironing Process

Use ironing after a hot wash of the pant by the washing machine

After placing the pant on the ironing board, cover it with a pressing cloth and continue ironing it. Ensure that you completely cover it up. The pressing cloth will protect your fabric even from the ironing that is the most severe.

  • As a side note, the appropriate temperature range for the iron is low to medium. A higher heat setting might result in polyester that is more rigid in the end.
  • Put some pressure on the fabric with the iron, and then run it all the way over the pant. Continue until the pant is completely dry.
  • It is suggested that you use a dry iron. It will deliver the precise impact of striking that you are looking for.

Check for Shrinkage

After completely drying the pant, the pant should be shrunk now. As you have already applied some extensive activities, don’t use the ironing process more than once. It’s risky for the pant’s state.

Along with color fading, excessive iron heat will damage the pant. Check the pant got it’s required shrinking already.

How to Shrink Softball Pants? – Tailor the Pant From a Professional

Aside from the hot washing and ironing method, you also can shrink your pant by professionally tailoring them. Since the polyester is not typical cotton, the sewing area might be faded during the sewing. That is why we don’t suggest this initially.

But, you can take help from a professional who is an expert on it. Also, this will cost you a little more money to do it. But if the budget is not an issue, you can go for it.

When Shrinking Fails: Becky’s Dugout Hacks (No-Sew Solutions)

A quick note from Becky Cahill: As a former SEC infielder at Auburn, I’ve dealt with my fair share of ridiculously oversized uniform pants right before a double-header.

The harsh reality of 100% polyester is that sometimes, no matter how many times you boil or dry them on nuclear heat, they just won’t shrink enough.

When you don’t have a sewing machine or the time to visit a tailor, you need an instant fix. Here are the tried-and-true dugout hacks every softball player should know when their pants are just too big:

1. The Classic Waistband Roll

The oldest trick in the book. If your pants are too long and the waist is too loose, simply grab the top of the waistband and roll it outward (over the belt loops) one or two times. This instantly tightens the waist by an inch or more and shortens the inseam.

Pro Tip: Make sure your jersey is long enough to cover the roll, or tuck it in tightly so the umpire doesn’t notice the makeshift adjustment.

2. The Double Belt Technique

If your league requires a standard elastic baseball belt, use it to your advantage. Cinch the belt as tight as comfortably possible. The stiff elastic will bunch the excess fabric at the waist together.

If the bunching feels uncomfortable against your skin, pull the excess fabric toward the back of the pants (near the center belt loop) so the front remains flat and smooth for sliding.

3. The Heavy-Duty Safety Pin Hack

For a semi-permanent fix that lasts all game, grab two large, heavy-duty safety pins (the kind used for kilts or heavy blankets). Pinch the excess fabric on the inside of the waistband—usually at the two side seams above your hips. Fold the fabric inward to create a small pleat, and secure it tightly with the safety pin from the inside.

Warning: Make sure the pin is securely clasped and facing away from your skin, so it doesn’t pop open when you dive for a grounder!

4. Wear Compression Shorts (Sliding Shorts) Underneath

If the pants are generally baggy all over (not just the waist), wearing a thick pair of padded sliding shorts or compression leggings underneath can fill out the extra space. The added friction between the spandex and the polyester pants will also help keep them from sliding down when you run the bases.

If all else fails and you have a few days before your next tournament, taking them to a professional tailor to have the waist darted or the legs tapered is always the most reliable, permanent solution.
