When Wilson Sporting Goods started manufacturing their sports equipment, the “Success” golf club series was among them. However, later on, they have become one of the world’s leading sports equipment manufacturing companies.
Wilson is one of the most prominent sporting goods manufacturers in America. It is also among the oldest manufacturers established in 1913. Currently, this company is owned by Amer Group which is a Finland-based sports equipment manufacturing company.
Actually, the significance of Wilson Sporting Goods company will not be expressed in such little words. However, they have brought tremendous changes in the sports industry by providing quality products.
Wilson manufactures sporting goods for different types of games. They include tennis, baseball, golf, racquet, soccer, etc. They also manufacture high-quality sports apparel and footwear.
Thomas E. Wilson was the man behind the scene of Wilson sporting equipment manufacturing. He turned the company into sporting equipment manufacturing company from a meatpacking solution.
History Of Wilson Baseball Goods Manufacturer
Starting
Wilson Sporting Goods manufacturing company was formed in 1913 in Chicago. It was formed as Ashland MFG. Co. as a subsidiary of “Schwarzschild and Sulzberger”, which was a meatpacking company. However, Wilson was named Ashland because it was located on Ashland Ave.
The main goal of Ashland MFG. Co. was to ensure the use of slaughterhouse byproducts.
The company started producing sporting equipment in 1914. The equipment included tennis racquet strings, musical instrumental strings, surgical sutures, etc. Also, their products range from soccer equipment, photograph records to automobile tires.
Ashland Manufacturing Company brought Thomas E. Wilson as the president of its governing board. This was in 1915. After appointing him, everything changed. He was a much-experienced person who realized the future of sporting goods.
Because of his vision, he was able to break away from the parent company of Sulzberger and Schwarzchild and rename the company to “Wilson Sporting Goods” after his name.
Founded in 1916, the firm was named after him and specialized in the development of sports and athletic equipment. The Hetzinger Knitting Firm as well as a tiny caddy bag company were both purchased by him in the same year. After purchasing them, he began utilizing their mills to manufacture athletic products as a result of his acquisition.
Hetzinger, in particular, was reserved entirely for the production of high-quality sporting uniforms. Caddie bag mills, on the other hand, were only utilized to manufacture golf bags.
Behind The Scene Of The Company Name
In 1914, Schwartzchild and Sulzberger were forced to take over by a New York banking conglomerate, and every subsidiary of it including Ashland was to way doomed.
In this scenario, Thomas E. Wilson assumed command of Ashland and guided it to its destination. Mr Wilson’s initial contact with a security officer from Schwartzchild and Sulzberger was recounted by a Schwartzchild and Sulzberger employee.
“It was the last of February or the first of March, the day he came over here. A wretched day it was, too—rain and snow and sleet. I was standing in this box when he drove in, and he pulled up the right side of me.”
“‘I’m Mr Wilson,’ says he; ‘You might have heard I was coming over here. I thought I’d like to introduce myself.’ And would you believe it, sir, he asked me my name! And he and I shook hands. And then he asked me what was the way to the office, and where should he park his car?”
Thomas E. Wilson was born in 1868 in Ontario, Canada. At the age of nine, he came to America with his family. At the age of 47, he took over Sulzberg’s business and set the course to the primary goal of the company.
Wilson quoted in his book “Men Are Making America” in 1917 that,
“One day in the fall of 1915 I received a telephone message from the Blackstone Hotel from two New York bankers who said they wanted to see me”.
So, analysis says that they did not offer Wilson to take over the company and named after him only for his goodwill. It was because they wanted to use the name “Wilson”, to promote the company. It was the President of the USA by that time, Woodrow Wilson, says MADE IN CHICAGO MUSEUM.
However, the way they approached worked fine later.
Success Begins
The success of Wilson started after starting the production of athletic uniforms, and golf bags. With continuous success, Wilson added Soccer and Basketball equipment to their manufacturing list.
The quality of the equipment of Wilson was so good that they guaranteed an unconditional two-year guarantee for all of their products in 1917.
Wilson also started to manufacture golf clubs in 1917. After one year, Thomas E. Wilson left Wilson. However, it did not impact the company’s production pace. Quality did not fall as well.
Rather, at the end of the year 1918, the sales reached $1 million marks of Wilson company. It was such a great success for the company in a short time.
In the late 1910s, Wilson acquired the Chicago Sporting Goods Company. They made an agreement to supply all sporting equipment for the Chicago Cubs baseball team.
Wilson hired one of the great craftsmen Arch Turner, who was famous for his craftsmanship in the leather industry. He ensured something exceptional for leather football, which was influential for the development of the game.
The 1920s decade was one of the most successful periods for Wilson Sports Goods Company. They innovated Ray Schalk “Catcher’s Mitt” in 1922. They introduced comforts, design, and padding to the baseball game.
Wilson added Knute Rockne as a football goods advisor in 1922. His double-line leather football was the most significant addition of his to Wilson company. Also, the first valve-inflated football.
Rockne and Wilson also developed waistline football pants with more padding comfort.
Golf Club Innovation
After the unfortunate plane-crashing death of Rockne in 1931, Wilson collaborated with Dana X. Bible. He was the University of Nebraska’s football coach. Bible helped Wilson to develop helmets and shoulder pads along with other football products.
However, he could not take the influence that Rockne did. For this reason, Wilson focused on the equipment of golf.
Wilson brought a new innovation of “Sand Wedge Golf Club” in 1932. It was an R-90 model. The design was unique. Because it divides the weight of the club in the club’s head toes. They sold 50,000 units of the golf club that year.
In 1939, Wilson made a great innovation of golf clubs by bonding different types of wood. This design made a criss-cross pattern of the golf clubs which was more powerful in hitting. Before this in 1937, Wilson appointed Sam Snead as one of their advisors.
At the end of the 1930s, Wilson was able to ensure their products in the market with great quality and trust.
World War II And Postwar Period
World War II is a significant chapter of history. The impact of the war had also lied on Wilson manufacturing. During the war, almost the entire production went to manufacture subsidiary products of the war.
During the war, Wilson had been manufacturing war tents, duffel bags, and safety helmets. The products went to the American soldier for use in the war.
However, even during the war, Wilson developed Wilson Duke football. It was adopted as the official football of the USA NFL in 1941.
On the other hand, they had been the official ball supplier of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1946. The relationship lasted the next 37 years.
After the war period, Wilson started to grow dramatically. They were able to bring Ted Williams as their baseball equipment advisor. He joined in 1946 in Wilson. Expectedly, Wilson was able to grow the reputation of the company with the baseball equipment.
“Father of the Modern Tennis” Jack Kramer was also joined as an advisor for tennis equipment. He drove the company to the peak of the quality of tennis equipment as well. He developed the Jack Karmer signed tennis racquet lineup.
In the year 1950, the president of the company Lawrence Blaine Icely died who was appointed as the president of the company after Wilson left the company. But this did not impact the company’s progress.
After 5 years of Icely’s death, Wilson company purchased the Ohio-Kentucky company. They dedicatedly used the company for manufacturing football gear.
They also purchased “Wonder Products Company” in 1964. It was a toy manufacturing company. Wilson then transformed the firm into a maker of face masks for helmets and leg protectors for baseball catchers.
In 1967, another change happened to Wilson Sporting Goods Company. Ling-Temco-Vought acquired Wilson company in that year.
The Period Of 1970s And ‘80s
With the development of the Wilson company, it was too fast to change its ownership. PepsiCo Inc. purchased Wilson in 1970. They wanted to use the popularity of Wilson to expand their business. However, they supported Wilson financially to expand its business internationally.
Wilson launched a manufacturing plant in Ireland in 1976. Wilson provided almost all uniforms to the Major League teams in the 1970s. Also, Wilson provided all uniforms to the “United States Summer Olympic” team in the decade.
Another ownership of Wilson got changed in 1985. “WSGC Holdings” purchased it. In the same year “Bogey Acquisitions Company” and WSGC was merged.
On the other hand, Bogey is affiliated with Amer Group Ltd., a multinational company headquartered in Helsinki, Finland.
From the end of March 1989 till today, Amer Group has been owning the Wilson Sporting Goods Company.

The second, third, and fourth bigs were 7%, 4.9% and 4.6% held by “Anthony Industries, Inc.,” “Johnson Worldwide Associates,” and “Spalding & Evenflo Co., Inc.” respectively.
Amer Group, the parent company of Wilson provided every type of support to enrich the company profile of Wilson in the ‘90s. Wilson was able to grow its sales in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Italy, and Australia by the mid-’90s.
