A baseball team consists of baseball team players. There are different positions in the national pastime of America, both in the offensive and defensive teams. 

All players are signed on the baseball roster for the entire season. Two types of rosters are in operation for the players. The roster size is different for different leagues, as well as the age groups. There are actively 25-man, 26-man, and 40-man rosters for various reasons.

Baseball Roster: How Many Players On A Baseball Team 

The roster means the player list for a whole season. All players who are under contract and can play any match in a particular season are on the roster list. 

The players are permitted to participate under the terms of the league agreement.

You will see two rosters for each team: Active and Expanded. The active roster consists of 25 players who actively participate in the game. On the other hand, the extended roster has reserve players. Primarily, the extended roster has 40 players.

Active Roster

The active roster was started in 1910. However, there was no name for it at first. But, later on, the name for the contracted players was set as an active roster. 

There were 24 players on an active roster during World War I, after World War II, during the Great Depression, and during 1986-1989. This is because of economic issues. 

But primarily the number of active players is 25 in a baseball team who can participate in a Major League within a particular time range. The time range is from the opening day (first week of April) to September 1. 

The active roster consists of fielding position players, pitchers, and reserve players. The 25-man active roster is split into 5 starting pitchers, 7 relieving pitchers, 2 catchers, 6 infielders, and 5 outfielders.

But, in 2020, two significant changes are employed in Major League baseball. The teams can include 26 active rosters till August 31 for the postseason. From September 1, 2020, the teams can include two additional players (a total of 28) for the rest of the regular season. 

Since then, the teams can include 13 pitchers, which is 14 for the September regular season. On the other hand, another extra player is a day-night doubleheader which is not included in the regular pitchers count.

Expanded Roster

The extended roster consists of 40 players.  You can also call the roster a 40-man roster. This group of players has been added to a team’s roster for various reasons. 

Primarily, the Major League team management adds extra 14 players to the previous 26-man active roster. This makes the 40-man roster or extended roster. In an injury or poor performance, additional players will be called upon to step in.

A player who wants to join the active roster must be on the 40-man roster. The contract has a time rule of adding a player to the 40-man roster. 

If the teams signed a player at 18 or younger, he must be protected for 5 seasons. And if the player added to the 40-man roster, who is 19 or older, they must be covered for 4 seasons. 

For the 2021 season, Major League team clubs could add another 5 players to their taxi squad. Among the five players, one must be designated as a catcher. The additional players can work with the team during the league but can not wear uniforms.

What Is September Call Up?

You already know that the postseason expands its roster on September 1, don’t you?

The teams up their 26 players to 28 this time. This is generally called 26–man roster. The players who get a chance to join the team in the expanded regular season to the end are the September call-up. 

We see the teams can expand to a 40-man roster from an active 25-man roster. But, the additional players cannot directly play the game during the season. They have to go through some rules. 

On the other hand, the September call-up can directly participate in the rest of the season.

How Many Players Are in Baseball for Major League?

I mentioned above the size of the Major League Baseball roster. A team can add 26 players to its active roster in the Major League. And it is up to 40 for the expanded roster list. 

Number Of Players On A Baseball Team In the Minor League

Minor League(MiLB) is the second-largest professional baseball league. Teams are mainly affiliated with the MLB franchises. MiLB teams can keep 28 to 35 players in their active roster regarding their playing level. 

On the other hand, the extended roster size 40-man roster like MLB. 

In College Baseball, How Many Baseball Players Per Team Roster?

The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) allows 35 players in their roster for Division I. On the other hand, the number of players on the roster for Division II may go up to 39. And, for Division III, they may carry 34 players on the roster list. 

On the contrary, NAIA school Division can have 38 players on their teams, while NJCAA can hold 30 players for each team. 

Age Group Roster Size

At the age group level, the roster size is comparatively smaller. The youth age group is divided into 6 groups. They are

• Tee Ball- Age group 4 to 7.
• Major Division- Age group 9 to 12.
• Intermediate League- Age group 11 to 13.
• Junior League- Age group 12 to 14.
• Senior League- Age group 13 to 16.

The Minor and Tee-ball teams have no player limit for the roster. But, primarily, they hold 14 to 20 players. On the other hand, the rest of the age group contains 12 to 15 players in their roster list.

At the youth age group, baseball takes seven innings. And generally, they play about 30 games in a season. So, the need for resting the players is more diminutive. That is why the youth age groups keep the roster size smaller.

The answer is 9. There are 9 fielders on the baseball field during the game. Now, we will discuss the defensive fielders’ nine fielding positions in this section. 

The Pitcher

The Pitcher is among the most important players on the defensive side.  A pitcher is a player who pitches (throws) balls to the batter. The pitchers who start the pitching are known as Starting Pitchers. 

A right-handed pitcher RHP throws the ball with the right hand, and a left-handed pitcher does vice versa.

The First Baseman

The Second Baseman

The second baseman fields beside the second base of the baseball field. He is one of the role players in double playing. He makes the collaboration with the shortstop to execute the double-play. 

The Third Baseman

Like the other two bases, the third base is the place where the third baseman fields. He plays a vital role during the fielding. Primarily his responsibility in managing the hit balls by the batters. 

Also, the third baseman is generally a speedy and agile player because he needs to cover a broader space in the field. 

The Shortstop

The position between the second base and the third base is the position for the shortstop. As I mentioned before, he is part of the double-play combination with the second baseman. 

In general, a shortstop is a person with quick reflection. Because he is the player who has to manage the area between the second and third bases. 

The Catcher

The Catcher is the player behind the home plate. He catches the balls coming by pitching from the Pitcher. The catchers play a vital role in baseball by communicating and grooming the Pitchers for fruitful strikes. 

The catcher plays a vital role in preventing the run scored by the batters.

The Left Fielder

The left fielder stands in the left-field position on the baseball field. The left fielder should have a pair of solid hands since he needs to throw the balls across a long distance toward the baseman. 

Another two positions in the outfield are centerfield and right field. 

The Center Fielder
